Born on December 5, 1935 , in the city of Voroshilovgrad (now Lugansk), Ukraine.
In 1958, was admitted to Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of Iranian Philology; was taught by Acad. M.N.Bogolyubov (Middle Persian and Old Persian), Dr A.N.Boldyrev (introduction into Iranian Philology), Dr Ch.G.-A.Baiburdi (Modern Persian), Dr O.I,Zavyalova (Phonetics), Dr L.T.Gyuzalyan (Classical Persian texts, history of material culture), Dr S.N.Sokolov (Classical Persian, the language of Avesta), Dr A.Z.Rosenfeld (Tajik and dialectology), Dr A.T.Tagirdzhanov (Arabic), Dr I.P.Petrushevsky (history of Iran). In 1964, graduated from the university.
From September, 1964, to August, 1967, doctoral student at Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of the History of Near Eastern Countries, supervised by correspnding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Dr N.V.Pigulevskaya, an expert in Syrian studies.
From September 1967 till present, researcher at the Leningrad/St Petersburg Department of the Institute of Oriental Studies (now the IOM RAS). In 1969, defended the PhD dissertation entitled Iran on the Eve of the Arabic Conquest: Sources, Inner and External Politics, Issues of Administrative Division [Иран накануне арабского завоевания (источники, внутренняя и внешняя политика, вопросы административного деления)]. In 2000, defended the Habilitation disseration entitled Monetary System of Iran during the Late Sassanids and Early Omeyads, from the end of the 6th Century through the Beginning of the 8th Century. From January 2004 up to January 2016, leading researcher at the Department of Near Eastern Studies, the IOM RAS. Published more than 130 papers, including 4 monographs.
Major research interests: the history of Iran from the 4th to 10th century, including studies of political, economical and cultural history on the basis of narrative and epigraphic texts, numismatics and religious, Zoroastrian, texts. At the moment, Dr A.Kolesnikov is preparing the edition and translation of Books 5 and 4 of Denkard, the text from the 9th to 10th century, and several entries on Christianity in the Sassanid (Pre-Islamic) Iran for the Orthodox Encyclopedia.
