Born on October 31, 1955, in Hangzhou (People’s Republic of China). Chinese name - Pang Xiaomei. In spring 1959, moved with her family to Leningrad (USSR) for permanent residence.

Education:

From 1973 to 1978, student of Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Oriental studies, the Department of Chinese Philology, was degreed MA in Chinese Philology and Literature with highest degree;

From 1986 to 1990, doctoral student at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, with a research on the Manchu language of the 18th century;

In 2004, defended her PhD dissertation in Manchu history and historiography, entitled Manchu manuscripts and blockprints for the study of the Qing empire history and culture of the 18th century.

Affiliation:

From 1979 to 1985, the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, USSR Academy of Sciences;

From 1985 to 1987, the Library of the Academy of Sciences, Leningrad;

From 1987 to 2004, the Leningrad/St Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, RAS, the research group of Far Eastern Textology, senior researcher (from June 2005);

From 2001 to 2004, academic secretary of the group of Far Eastern Textology;

From 2004 to 2006, academic secretary of the Department of Far Eastern Studies;

From 2007 up to present, head of the Department of Far Eastern Studies.

Professional Activities:

Member of the Permanent International Altaistic Conference (PIAC), from 1986, the International Society of Shamanistic Research (ISSR), 1993, the council board of the Italian-German-Russian series Aetas Manjurica (Harrassowitz, Wiesbaden, Germany), from 1992;

Co-editor of the annual journal Altaica (Institute of Oriental Studies, Moscow, Russia), from 1999;

Member of the Italian-Russian expedition for the studies of the indangered cultures – the Manchu and Sibe peoples, from 2001;

Secretary of the journal Written Monuments of the East issued by the IOM RAS, from January 2006.

Teaching Activities:

From April to May 1998, Manchu language course at the University of Sorbonne IV, Paris, France;

September 2002, Manchu history and culture course at the State Amur University, Blagoveshchensk, Russia.

From February 2004 to May 2008, Introduction to Manchu Studies course at St Petersburg State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of China and South Eastern countries.

From September 2006 to May 2008, practical Chinese language course at St Petersburg State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies.

Major research interests:

Manchu historiography, literature and religion; Manchu written and printed book collections; History and culture of the Sibe; Hstory of Christian missionaries in China (Manchu documents on the history of the Russian Ecclesiastic and European missionaries); History of Manchu studies and sinology.

Published more than 130 papers, including 8 monographs.
