Born on 4 February, 1961, in Tbilisi, Georgia, to the family of an army officer.
In 1978, graduated from school in Polotsk, Belorussia, and was admitted to Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Oriental Studies, the Department of Iranian Philology.
During 1981-82, served as a military interpreter in the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. In 1983, received the Medal For Battle Merit, by the order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from March 3, 1983.
In 1984, completed his education at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University and joined the doctoral program there. In 1987, started his work as a lecturer at the Faculty’s Department of the History of Near Eastern Countries. From 1987 up to present, gives lectures and special courses on the history, sources and historiography of Iran and Afghanistan, general history of Asian and African countries, history of Oriental religions and ideological systems.
In 1988, defended his PhD dissertation, The History of Beha’ism. Beha Ulla (1817-1892) and His Teaching [История возникновения бехаизма: Беха-Улла (1817―1892) и его учение]. In 1998, defended his Habilitation Dissertation, The Baha’i International Community during the 19th to 20th Century. History, Ideology, Structure [Бахаитская международная община в XIX―XX вв. (история, идеология, структура)], the degree was confirmed by the Higher Attestation Commission of Russia in 1999.
In 2001, received the degree of Professor at the Department of the History of Near Eastern Countries at Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University.
In 2011-2018, leading researcher at the Department of Oriental Manuscripts and Documents of the IOM RAS.
