The publication offers readers a complete annotated Russian translation of the “Primer for Youth” (16th c.), a school textbook on the foundations of the Confucian doctrine and the history of China and Korea that was widely used in traditional Korea. This text, learnt by heart by many generations of pupils, had been shaping the worldview of Korean educated elite for centuries. It is one of the important sources on the ideology and historiography of Choson-period Korea (1392–1910) and can be also used for studying the history of Literary Chinese in Korea, Korean language, and Korean-Chinese language interference.
The publication is based on the xylographic edition of the work kept at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences (under the shelf number C64) which is one of the first Korean books brought to Russia.
The monograph is intended for specialists in historiography and intellectual history of East Asia, philologists studying Middle Korean and Literary Chinese, and everyone interested in traditional culture and languages of East Asia. PDF-files Front matter
