The legacy of the prominent Russian Orientalist Ilya N. Berezin (1818–1896) has long been the object of researchers' attention. Since the 1920s and up to present time, the Russian scholars have been trying to analyze and describe Berezin’s achievements in certain areas of Oriental studies. Particularly, his study trips in the Middle East are described in detail by Boris M. Dantsyg (1896–1973). The article introduces the text of Dantsyg’s unpublished essay, kept at the Archives of Orientalists, Institute of Oriental Manuscripts, RAS. The essay provides an overview of Berezin’s trip through the territory of the Ottoman Empire. His views on the history and culture of the region are analyzed by Dantsyg from the perspective of Soviet school of Oriental studies. The essay is also of reference value, as it contains information about many of Berezin’s articles published in Russian periodicals of the 19th century.
