Vasilyeva E.I. South Eastern Kurdistan from 16th to 19th Century. Sources on the History of the Kurdish Emirates of Ardelan and Baban [Юго-Восточный Курдистан в XVI—XIX вв. Источник по истории курдских эмиратов Арделан и Бабан]. St Petersburg, Nestor-Istoriya 2016. 176 p. ISBN 978-5-4469-0775-5.

Summary

Information about Abdalqadir Babani, the author of the chronicle “Siyar alakrad”, is very scarce. It does not go beyond the scanty facts he tells us about himself in his book. He was bom in 1247/1831-32, presumably, in the city of Suleymani, the capital of the Baban principality, into a noble Kurdish family from Amir Mahmud Baban’s closest circle. In 1835, due to a complicated situation, the family moved to Sanandaj, which was the main town of Ardelan, the neighboring Kurdish emirate. The first half of the author’s life coincided in time with a critical period in Kurdistan history: in the mid-19th century, all the ruling Kurdish dynasties in Baban, Hakkari, Bokhtan and other principalities were displaced, the last of them being Bani Ardelan dynasty, which lost power in 1867.

The author and his family were so closely connected with the houses of the displaced rulers that their life was drastically changed after those were removed from power. Abdalqadir Babani began to write his book in the December of 1868, one year after the displacement of the last Ardelan amir. In 1870, he suspended work on the Chronicle to complete it in a year after deciding to leave Ardelan for Southern Kurdistan, namely for the areas known as “the Emirate of Baban” which was the land where the author was bom and which belonged his ancestors.

The history of the Emirates of Baban and Ardelan occupies a central place in the Chronicle. The desire to write it came to the author when the principalities were destroyed and all the structures associated with them were eliminated. Consequently, it would be appropriate to consider the book as a “requiem” for the old Kurdish rulers-amirs of Baban and Ardelan, whose power had crumbled before his very eyes.
