The Khotanese Sudhanāvadana is a very pleasant narrative
text, but its interpretation is made difficult by the occurrence
of several hapax legomena and by a partly corrupt textual
tradition. It tells of the love of prince Sudhana and the
kinnarī princess Manoharā, their separation, Sudhana’s
journey to the land of the kinnaras in search of his wife,
and their final reunion (Sudhana was the Buddha in a former
birth). The work was translated into English by Harold
W Bailey in 1966 and a German translation of Sudhana’s
journey, improving on Bailey’s, was provided by Almuth
Degener in 1986. As a matter of fact, though Bailey’s pioneering
interpretation is on the whole still reliable, some
progress can be made in many points. Here I wish to deal
with two problems and to point to their respective solutions,
that are to be found in a hitherto unrecognized Indian
loanword and in a more accurate reading of the manuscript...
