In this paper I would like to offer some very personal
speculations about the effects of computers on the study of
medieval Arabic grammatical texts, in particular the Kitāb
of Sībawayhi ( d. ca. 1801796), though most of what I shall
say could be applied to any field of scholarship which relies
for its data on manuscript sources. I will first define my position,
then look at the specific case of editing the Kitāb in
hypertext, and will conclude with some general thoughts on
the nature and future of research in this area...
