Alexei Georgievich
Sazykin

Candidate of Sciences (equiv. Ph.D.) - Philology
(15.08.1943 — 31.03.2005)
Born on August 15, 1943, in the settlement of Olga, Primorsky Region.

In 1971, graduated from Leningrad State University, the Faculty of Mongolian Philology, and was enrolled to the staff of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, the USSR Academy of Sciences. There, at the Department of Turkic and Mongolian Studies he proceeded along the long career path beginning as a research technician and ending up as a senior researcher.

After he completed his PhD dissertation in 1975, he soon became the major expert in the Institute's collection of Mongolian manuscripts and block-prints to which he devoted the whole 33 years of his work at the Institute. This, he compiled the 3-volumed extensive Catalogue of Mongolian Manuscripts and Block-Prints kept at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies, the USSR Academy of Sciences [Каталог монгольских рукописей и ксилографов ЛО ИВ АН СССР] thanks to which all the scholars world-wide obtained an access to one of the greatest libraries of Mongolian literature. The first volume already (1988) turned out to be an important event for the Mongolists.

In 1990, he edited the monograph The Story of Choijid-dagini [Повесть о Чойджид-дагини]. It was followed then with a great number of papers and monographs, often written along with Mongolian, Hungarian and Japanese colleagues. His talents as a researcher, his erudition and ability to analyse deeply the texts edited were perfectly reflected in them.

During the recent decades, the academic authority acquired by A.G.Sazykin made him into a major fugure of Mongolian studies world-wide. It suffices to list some of his very last publications.

  • Radnabhadra. The Moon Light. The Biography of Rabdjam Zaya Pandit [Раднабхадра. Лунный свет. История рабджам Зая-пандиты]. A facsimile edition. Tr. from Oirat by G.N.Rumyantsev and A.G.Sazykin. Transliteration of the text, introduction, notes, indices by A.G.Sazykin. St Petersburg 1999 (Pamyatniki kultury Vostoka. Vol. 7);
  • The Fifth (Anonymous) Mongolian Translation of The Diamond Sutra [Пятый (анонимный) монгольский перевод «Алмазной сутры»], - in Acta Orientalia Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae. T. 52, No 2. Budapest, 1999;
  • Agvan Dorjiev. The Amusing Story About the Journey Around the World (Autobiography) [Агван Доржиев. Занимательные заметки: Описание путешествия вокруг света. (Автобиография)], Facsimile edition, translation by A.D. Tsendina, transliteration, notes, glossary by A.G. Sazykin, A.D. Tsendina, Moscow 2003 (Pamyatniki pismennosti Vostoka, CXXXIII);
  • Visions of the Buddhist Hell [Видения буддийского ада]. Introduction, translation, notes, glossary by A.G. Sazykin, St Petersburg 2004; Catalogue Of the Buryat Xylographs And Lithographs Preserved in St Petersburg Collections [Каталог бурятских ксилографированных и литографированных изданий из коллекций Санкт-Петербурга]. Kyoto 2004.

A.G.Sazykin supervised a number of younger colleagues, some of which now work at various academic institutions. Thus, he contributed much to the development of Mongolian studies both in Russia and world-wide.

The death of A.G.Sazykin, on March 31, 2005, was echoed with deep sorrow in the hearts of all his friends.
