The extant collections of the Tangut and Liao Buddhist texts show that the
Buddhist complexes of both states had a number of common features implying
certain proximity between the Buddhist systems in the two countries.
Current research into the Buddhist texts retrieved from Khara-Khoto has generally
initiated a reevaluation of the previous views on the Tangut Buddhism: for example,
many special features that had been ascribed to the indigenous development of
Buddhism in Xi-Xia should be rather interpreted as the evidences of the Liao influence
on the formation of Tangut Buddhism. One of the specific features of Tangut
Buddhism, which are thus to be reconsidered, is the popularity of the Chinese
Huayan Teaching in the Tangut state...
